TOPPING has released a new version of the E70 DAC featuring the AKM AK4499EX DAC chip. It's called the TOPPING E70 VELVET. The AK4499EX is AKM’s new flagship DAC chip, so it’s no surprise that the E70’s specs absolutely shine. It decodes 32-bit/768kHz PCM with <0.00006% THD and 131dB of dynamic range.

It’s been a long road back for AKM after a fire destroyed their factory near the end of 2020. Since that time, American D/A chip manufacturer ESS has come to dominate the market. Recently, we’ve seen manufacturers begin to implement AKM chips again, such as in the budget-friendly SMSL D-6, but today truly marks AKM’s comeback.

In addition to the flagship DAC chip, TOPPING has thrown a 24-bit Bluetooth chip in the mix. Not only does this support all of the best codecs (LDAC, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, AAC, etc), but TOPPING made the brilliant choice of bypassing the Bluetooth chip’s internal D/A functionality and passed those duties on to the much more capable AKM chip. In plain English, this means that the Bluetooth should sound downright gorgeous.

The DAC’s quality of life features are all the usual suspects of TOPPING products: a 12V interface that allows you to chain multiple pieces of TOPPING equipment together and turn them off/on simultaneously; a selectable RCA/XLR output port that makes juggling multiple destinations less of a hassle; and a preamp mode with a -99dB to 0dB volume range.
