NEW: FIIO FD15 IEMS
Meet the FiiO FD15 stainless steel IEMs
The FiiO FD15 is a single dynamic driver IEM that succeeds the FD5 with a larger diaphragm, revised magnetic system, and a patented airflow design for bass tuning. Its 13.8mm driver pairs a magnalium diaphragm with a diamond-like carbon surround, while stainless steel shells house interchangeable tuning nozzles. A detachable Furukawa cable with 3.5mm and 4.4mm plugs accommodates listeners moving between single-ended and balanced headphone outputs.
A larger diaphragm with a revised suspension
The FD15’s diaphragm combines magnesium and aluminum in a rigid magnalium alloy, with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) surround controlling movement around its perimeter. Each material serves a different mechanical role: the diaphragm resists deformation, while the surround provides the flexibility needed for controlled excursion.
Effective diaphragm area increases by approximately 40% over the FD5. FiiO also uses a W-shaped surround that increases effective vibrating area by 30% compared with conventional diaphragms of the same size. These changes support greater air movement and the FD15’s intended emphasis on bass extension and vocal body.
Changes to the voice coil and magnetic system
The voice coil increases from 6.2mm in the FD5 to 8.6mm in the FD15, with a longer copper winding intended to improve efficiency and power handling. An external magnet arrangement increases magnet volume by approximately 69.5%, producing magnetic flux density up to 1.5T to control diaphragm movement.
Tesla Valve channels manage internal airflow
FiiO’s patented F.T.B.S. Tesla Valve design uses shaped channels to create different resistance depending on airflow direction. Outward airflow encounters greater resistance, lowering the cavity’s resonance frequency to extend bass response. Air moving inward passes more freely to help balance pressure inside the shell.
A frontal acoustic prism addresses sound propagation ahead of the driver. By managing differences in the paths sound waves take toward the ear, it is designed to improve phase consistency and high-frequency diffusion.
Two nozzle options for different tonal balances
The FD15 includes two pairs of interchangeable tuning nozzles. The red nozzles emphasize bass and a fuller vocal presentation, while the black nozzles bring high frequencies forward. Listeners can change the acoustic balance by swapping the nozzles.
Stainless steel shells with revised contact points
The shells use 316L stainless steel formed through powder metallurgy sintering, followed by hand-polishing and a PVD finish. Obsidian Black and Racing Silver finishes are available.
FiiO raised the nozzle angle by 6.7° while maintaining its length to improve ear canal alignment. Curved MMCX connector housings reduce pressure behind the ear, and a narrower frontal contact surface helps reduce friction and movement. Fourteen pairs of ear tips provide options for adjusting fit and seal.
A Furukawa cable with interchangeable plugs
The supplied cable combines Furukawa monocrystalline copper and monocrystalline silver-plated copper across four braided strands containing 480 wires. Expanded MMCX connectors attach the cable to the earpieces, while twist-lock 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced plugs let it connect to either output type.
