NEW: FiiO K13 Desktop DAC/Amp (ESS Version)

FiiO K13 Combines Headphone Amplification, Preamp Control, and Dual ESS DACs

The FiiO K13 is a desktop DAC, headphone amplifier, and preamplifier built around two ESS ES9039Q2M DACs and a fully balanced signal path. An XMOS XU316 USB interface supports PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512, while the balanced headphone amplifier delivers up to 2400mW + 2400mW into 32Ω. Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC, 10-band parametric EQ with Auto EQ, multiple analog and digital outputs, and separate AC and DC power inputs give the K13 enough flexibility to operate as a headphone amplifier or the digital control point of a desktop speaker system.

Dual ES9039Q2M DACs and fully balanced signal processing

Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by two ESS ES9039Q2M DACs using ESS's fourth-generation 32-bit HyperStream architecture. The ES9039Q2M is rated for 130dB dynamic range and -120dB THD+N at the chip level. Two ACCUSILICON AS318-L femtosecond crystal oscillators running at 45.1584MHz and 49.1520MHz provide separate clock frequencies for the common 44.1kHz and 48kHz sample-rate families.

The differential architecture continues through the analog stages rather than ending at the DAC. OPA1656 op-amps perform I/V conversion, OPA1642 devices are used in the low-pass filter and headphone amplifier stages, and separate TPA6120A amplifiers drive the left and right headphone channels. Three LTA8092 op-amps handle line-output buffering. Gain control, pop-noise suppression, and headphone protection are integrated into the amplifier circuitry.

Up to 2400mW per channel from the balanced output

The 4.4mm balanced headphone output provides at least 2400mW + 2400mW into 32Ω in high gain at less than 1% THD+N. Into a 300Ω load, output is at least 600mW + 600mW. The 6.35mm single-ended output provides at least 1220mW + 1220mW into 32Ω and 150mW + 150mW into 300Ω under the same high-gain measurement condition.

Low, medium, and high gain modes provide three separate volume curves for headphones with different sensitivities and power requirements. Output impedance remains below 0.4Ω from the 6.35mm output with a 32Ω load and below 1Ω from the balanced output under the same load condition. A-weighted noise is below 3µV from the single-ended headphone output and below 4.6µV balanced in medium gain, while system SNR is rated at 124dB or greater. THD+N is approximately 0.00034% at 1kHz, -6dB, into 32Ω.

Independent headphone and preamp volume control

The K13 can retain separate volume settings for its headphone and preamplifier outputs. Switching from headphones to active speakers or a connected power amplifier therefore restores the corresponding output level rather than applying one shared volume setting across both signal paths.

Output modes include PO, PRE, PO+PRE, and LO, allowing the K13 to operate as a dedicated headphone amplifier, variable-output preamplifier, simultaneous headphone and preamp source, or fixed-level DAC. Analog connectivity includes balanced XLR and RCA outputs alongside the 4.4mm balanced and 6.35mm headphone connections.

XMOS XU316 USB decoding and digital connectivity

An XMOS XU316 interface handles USB audio at up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512. Coaxial input supports PCM through 24-bit/192kHz and DSD64, while optical input accepts PCM through 24-bit/192kHz. When USB is selected as the source, the K13 can also provide a coaxial digital output at resolutions up to 24-bit/96kHz for feeding a separate digital component.

Dual USB-C connections sit alongside optical and coaxial digital inputs, giving the K13 several ways to integrate computers and other digital sources. Its frequency response extends from 20Hz to 80kHz with less than 2.9dB attenuation.

Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC

Bluetooth 5.4 provides wireless input from compatible phones, tablets, and computers, with LDAC, AAC, and SBC codec support. LDAC provides the higher-bandwidth option among the supported Bluetooth codecs when paired with a compatible source.

An ESP32-S3 serves as the K13's main control chip and supports communication with the FiiO Control app. Compatible settings can therefore be managed from a mobile device over Bluetooth without requiring access to the front-panel menus.

10-band PEQ with Auto EQ

The XMOS XU316 platform also supports a specially developed 10-band parametric equalizer across the K13's operating modes. Parametric EQ provides independent control over frequency, gain, and filter behavior, allowing corrections to be targeted more precisely than with fixed-band tone controls. PEQ processing supports signals at up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Multi-rail AC and DC power architecture

A built-in 30W AC power module allows the K13 to connect directly to 100–240V, 50/60Hz mains power. A separate 12V/2.5A DC input provides an alternative for use with a compatible external power supply.

Internally, the power architecture uses up to 18 low-noise LDO regulators and five DC-DC converters, with separate regulation assigned to analog and digital circuitry. The analog and power sections also incorporate four ELNA RA3 series silk-film audio capacitors, eight WIMA film capacitors, and 24 low-temperature-drift MELF resistors.

LCD interface, dual controls, and remote operation

A custom front-panel LCD displays sampling rate, volume, gain, input, and output mode. Two control knobs provide direct access to volume and menu functions, while the included infrared remote allows the same system to be operated from farther away. A configurable shutdown timer can be set from 1 to 99 minutes.

Adjustable RGB lighting can indicate the current sample rate, with brightness, color, and pulsing behavior configurable through the FiiO Control app. The K13 is housed in a thickened unibody aluminum-alloy enclosure with a circular top-panel skylight exposing part of the internal DAC section. Including its feet, the chassis measures approximately 8.27 × 7.40 × 1.65 inches (210 × 188 × 42mm), weighs approximately 2.12 lb (960g), and is available in black or silver. Overheating and overload protection monitor the K13 for abnormal operating conditions during desktop use.
