SMSL VMV D2R MK2

The SMSL VMV D2R MK2 is a flagship desktop DAC built around the ROHM BD34302EKV conversion platform, paired with a precision 10MHz OCXO clock system, XMOS XU316 USB processing, and a fully-balanced analog output stage. Designed for high-resolution playback across USB, AES/EBU, optical, coaxial, Bluetooth, and I²S sources, the D2R MK2 supports PCM up to 768kHz, native DSD512, and full MQA decoding while maintaining low distortion and low-noise operation across both headphone and two-channel systems.

ROHM conversion and balanced analog design

At the center of the D2R MK2 is ROHM’s BD34302EKV DAC chip, a conversion platform known for low distortion performance and stable linearity across high-resolution playback formats. SMSL pairs the DAC with a fully-balanced internal signal path designed to preserve channel separation and low-level detail while maintaining consistent output behavior across both RCA and balanced XLR connections.

The balanced XLR stage outputs up to 5.0Vrms with a rated dynamic range of 123dB and a signal-to-noise ratio of 123dB. Balanced THD+N reaches as low as 0.00013% (-117dB), keeping harmonic distortion low even during higher output operation. Separation between the analog and digital sections further reduces internal interference within the signal path.

10MHz OCXO clock architecture

The D2R MK2 integrates a 10MHz OCXO crystal oscillator rated at ±5ppb frequency stability. Unlike conventional crystal oscillators that can drift with temperature variation, the oven-controlled design maintains a stable operating temperature to reduce phase noise and timing instability inside the digital audio chain.

Lower jitter inside the clocking system improves timing consistency during digital-to-analog conversion, particularly with high-resolution PCM and DSD playback. The dedicated clock architecture is intended to maintain transient precision and stereo image stability across extended listening sessions and varying environmental conditions.

High-resolution digital platform

The XMOS XU316 USB processor provides the computational headroom required for modern high-bandwidth audio formats. USB and I²S inputs support PCM playback up to 768kHz at 32-bit resolution alongside native DSD512 decoding, while optical, coaxial, and AES/EBU inputs support PCM up to 192kHz and DoP playback.

Full MQA and MQA-CD hardware decoding is supported through USB, optical, coaxial, and AES connections. The rear panel also includes a dedicated external clock input alongside USB-C, optical, coaxial, AES/EBU, Bluetooth, and I²S connectivity for integration with transports, streamers, and digital front ends.

Linear power supply and wireless playback

A Noratel toroidal transformer anchors the D2R MK2’s linear power supply system. SMSL combines the transformer with adaptive voltage switching technology to maintain stable operation across different power environments while supplying the analog and digital stages independently. The low-noise power architecture is designed to reduce power-related interference during demanding playback conditions.

Wireless playback is handled through an integrated Qualcomm Bluetooth platform supporting LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC, and SBC codecs. LDAC transmission supports playback up to 24-bit/96kHz where supported by the source device, which allows higher bandwidth wireless streaming compatibility with modern mobile devices and network streamers.

Chassis and user interface

The front panel combines a compact aluminum chassis with a 1.9-inch fully bonded tempered glass display and a multifunction control knob for direct menu navigation. SMSL also includes a one-touch “Best Setting” mode that provides quick access to optimized playback presets without navigating deeper configuration menus.

Gold-plated RCA and balanced XLR outputs support integration into desktop headphone systems, powered monitor chains, and full-size two-channel speaker systems while maintaining separate analog output connectivity options.
