Dual Cirrus Logic DAC architecture

The MoonRiver 3 uses two Cirrus Logic CS43198 flagship DAC chips paired with independent dual-channel amplifier circuits. This architecture allows the DAC stage and amplification stage to operate with dedicated power regulation through five separate power chips. The result is a complete Hi-Fi signal path designed to reduce distortion, lower noise, and maintain channel separation while delivering balanced output power for demanding headphones.

131dB dynamic range with ultra-low noise

Measurements from MOONDROP’s R&D lab show a dynamic range reaching 131dB and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 114dB. In practical terms, this means quiet passages remain clean and detailed while louder passages retain headroom without compression. The low noise floor allows subtle textures and spatial information to remain audible even with sensitive in-ear monitors.

High-resolution decoding for modern audio libraries

The USB audio interface supports PCM up to 32-bit / 384kHz and native DSD256 decoding. When connected to a computer, smartphone, or tablet through the USB-C interface, the MoonRiver 3 functions as an external DAC that bypasses the device’s internal audio hardware. This allows lossless and high-resolution files to be decoded with the DAC’s dedicated circuitry.

Balanced and single-ended headphone outputs

The Moonriver 3 provides both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs. The balanced connection can deliver up to 4Vrms and approximately 500mW of undistorted output power, allowing the device to drive many full-size headphones while maintaining clean output. 

Precision tactile volume control

A physical volume knob provides 100 discrete steps through a digital encoder. The knob also functions as a push control for playback pause. Because the volume control is handled by the DAC rather than the phone or computer, the signal maintains resolution even at lower listening levels while offering consistent tactile feedback.

Interactive DSP tuning system

The second-generation interactive DSP system allows parametric equalization through the MOONDROP mobile app or web interface. Users can adjust filter type, frequency points, gain, and Q values while referencing a database of headphone frequency responses. This makes it possible to tailor playback to different headphones and listening preferences without external software.

Community frequency response library

The integrated tuning community allows users to upload and share frequency response data and DSP presets. Approved submissions become part of an online reference database that helps users find baseline tuning profiles for a wide range of headphones. These profiles can be downloaded and applied directly to the MoonRiver 3 hardware.

Web-based tuning and debugging tools

In addition to the mobile app, tuning can be accessed through a browser interface on compatible versions of Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. The web interface provides expanded controls for DSP adjustment and clearer management of shared presets, with account synchronization between the website, database, and mobile software.

USB-C power delivery and charging support

A secondary USB-C port supports Power Delivery charging while the DAC is in use. With the included ddHiFi cable, the MoonRiver 3 can supply power to connected phones or tablets while audio playback continues. Charging power varies depending on device compatibility and PD protocol, reaching up to 60W in supported scenarios.

Precision stainless steel construction

The chassis is machined from stainless steel with a semi-transparent decorative window that reveals the internal layout. The curved surface integrates the volume knob into the enclosure and includes a recessed design that reduces accidental adjustments when carried in a pocket or bag.
