Tanchjim Darling Hybrid IEM
An innovative hybrid IEM
Tanchjim was founded in 2015 and, despite its short lifespan, has made big waves in the audio market with its steady offering of budget and mid-tier IEMs. Their flagship, Oxygen, moved reviewers with its stellar imaging, sub-bass response, and minimalist aesthetic. But no company is worth its mettle if it quits innovating, and today Tanchjim is unseating its flagship with the all-new Darling IEM.
The Darling is a hybrid IEM with one dynamic driver and two Sonion balanced armatures per monitor. It features a number of innovations, such as adjustable depth nozzle and T-APB air balance eartips. This IEM is a great option for Tanchjim fans eager to experience the company’s foray into hybrid design.
One dynamic driver and two balanced armatures for exceptional detail and clarity
The Darling features one dynamic driver and two Sonion balanced armatures per monitor. Unlike traditional IEMs that use a single dynamic driver, balanced armatures are smaller, lighter, and provide greater output for less power. Inside each balanced armature, a small reed is balanced between two magnets (hence the “balanced” in balanced armature). The magnets vibrate the reed, and the reed’s motion is transferred to a diaphragm.
By allocating different frequency ranges to different balanced armatures, the Darling is capable of producing a more detailed and clarified response. Think of it like this. You give a muralist a single hour to paint a mural on a large wall. They may be able to paint the whole thing, but the finished product won’t be very detailed. Now imagine you give that same task to three muralists. By splitting up the job, they can deliver a far more detailed finished product.
Adjustable depth nozzle
You’ll notice that the Darling’s nozzle has not one but two eartip fastening rings. These allow you to choose the depth at which the nozzle penetrates the eartip, which in turn changes the depth at which the eartip penetrates your ear canal. The depth options present different sonic qualities like bass extension and staging. (Just be careful you don’t shove the Darling too far up your ear!)
Naturally isolating
Because the eartips of IEMs fill up your ear canal, they’re naturally isolating. They’re not as isolating as noise-cancelling IEMs or headphones, but much more so than open backs. They’re a great choice for commuting, traveling, and other scenarios in which privacy is important.
Microfiber matte leather storage bag
The Darling comes with an elegant microfiber matte leather storage bag. The case’s classic rounded corners evoke traditional travel watch boxes. The supple leather feels wonderful in the hand, and the wide stitching gives it a hand-crafted aesthetic.
