Cayin CP6 triple-timbre portable CD player

The Cayin CP6 is a portable CD player, USB DAC, digital transport, Bluetooth transceiver, and fully-balanced headphone amplifier built around three selectable analog timbre modes. Its signal path combines dual Cirrus Logic CS4308P DACs, matched Raytheon JAN6418 NOS tubes, selectable Class A and Class AB amplification, and separate 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced outputs. Alongside conventional CD playback, the CP6 can archive discs to compatible FAT32 storage, operate as a USB DAC through an XMOS XU316 interface, and send or receive Bluetooth audio through a Qualcomm QCC3083 platform. The combination is intended for listeners who want physical-disc playback alongside modern wired and wireless source options in one portable component.

Three selectable timbre modes

The CP6 provides three switchable signal paths labeled Classic Tube, Modern Tube, and Solid-State. Classic Tube and Modern Tube both use the internal JAN6418 tube stage, while Solid-State bypasses the tube coloration for a more neutral path. Cayin describes Classic Tube as warmer and smoother with greater emphasis on vocals, while Modern Tube is tuned for a more open presentation with additional detail and dynamic contrast.

The measured differences between the three modes reflect their distinct circuit behavior. Through the 4.4 mm balanced output, Solid-State mode is rated for ≤0.002% THD+N, ≥119 dB dynamic range, ≥119 dB SNR, and ≥115 dB channel separation. Classic Tube is specified at ≤0.5% THD+N, ≥104 dB dynamic range, ≥104 dB SNR, and ≥104 dB channel separation, while Modern Tube is rated at ≤0.4% THD+N, ≥104 dB dynamic range, ≥104 dB SNR, and ≥97 dB channel separation. Frequency response extends to 45 kHz in Solid-State mode, 40 kHz in Classic Tube, and 44 kHz in Modern Tube, all within ±2 dB from a 20 Hz lower limit.

Matched JAN6418 tube stage

The two tube modes use a matched pair of Raytheon JAN6418 military-grade NOS pentodes operating in a dual-channel Class A circuit. Cayin supplies the tube stage from a dedicated 22 V low-noise power rail and uses DC filament power to reduce heater-related hum, which is especially relevant in a portable product where the tube circuitry shares a compact enclosure with digital processing, charging electronics, and headphone amplification.

The matched-tube arrangement is intended to maintain consistent left and right channel behavior, while the dedicated supply keeps the tube section electrically separated from noisier subsystems elsewhere in the player. Users can move between the two tube tunings and the solid-state path directly from the CP6 without changing source or output configuration.

Dual Cirrus Logic DAC architecture

Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by two Cirrus Logic CS4308P DACs. Each device is a 32-bit, eight-channel converter, and Cayin operates the pair in mono mode with fully parallel differential current output. Allocating multiple DAC channels to each side of the stereo signal allows the conversion stage to use parallel processing rather than assigning a single DAC channel to each audio channel.

Two TI OPA1612 devices handle current-to-voltage conversion and low-pass filtering after the DAC stage. The differential signal architecture continues into the downstream analog circuitry, supporting the CP6’s fully-balanced topology and preserving separate positive and negative signal legs through the amplification path.

Fully-balanced headphone amplification

The headphone stage uses a four-channel discrete amplifier with dual TI OPA1652 op-amps feeding Nexperia power transistors in a push-pull current stage. The CP6 supports headphones with impedances from 8Ω to 600Ω and provides both a 3.5 mm single-ended connection and a 4.4 mm balanced connection. Gain can be switched between 0 dB high gain and -6 dB low gain, while output impedance is specified at 1.2Ω.

From the 4.4 mm balanced output, the CP6 delivers 900 mW + 900 mW into 32Ω when running from its internal battery and 1100 mW + 1100 mW in external DC mode. At 16Ω, output rises to 1100 mW + 1100 mW on battery power and 1300 mW + 1300 mW from DC power. The higher figures in DC mode reflect the additional power available when the amplifier is no longer constrained by the internal battery supply.

Selectable Class A and Class AB operation

The output stage can operate in either Class A or Class AB mode. In Class A, the amplifier devices remain conducting throughout the signal cycle, avoiding the crossover region associated with push-pull output stages at the cost of higher continuous power consumption. Class AB reduces idle current by allowing the output devices to share conduction across the waveform, improving efficiency and increasing the available output-power envelope.

The two modes can therefore be selected according to headphone load, desired battery use, and amplifier operating preference without changing the CP6’s DAC or timbre configuration.

Precision four-channel volume control

Volume is managed by a JRC NJW1195A four-channel electronic controller with adjustment in 0.5 dB increments. Using a four-channel part allows the CP6 to control all legs of its balanced signal path together rather than reducing a balanced topology to a conventional two-channel volume stage.

An onsemi FSA2275 audio switch handles signal routing with low on-resistance and low switching distortion. The combination supports controlled attenuation and source-path switching while keeping the balanced architecture intact through the analog section.

CD playback and lossless disc archiving

The CP6 uses a custom anti-shock CD mechanism with a precision laser pickup and dedicated servo system for disc tracking, reading, and error correction. The transport is designed for portable operation, where vibration and movement impose different mechanical requirements from a stationary home CD player.

In addition to direct playback, the CP6 can rip CDs in lossless format to compatible FAT32 storage devices. This allows the optical transport to serve both as a playback mechanism and as a source for creating digital copies of supported discs.

XMOS USB DAC and digital transport functions

USB audio is handled by a 16-core XMOS XU316 platform supporting both UAC 2.0 and UAC 1.0 operation with Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux devices. The interface uses asynchronous USB transmission, placing clock control on the receiving audio device rather than relying directly on the timing of the host computer or mobile device.

A dedicated precision clock system manages timing before the audio stream reaches the DAC stage, reducing dependence on source-side clock accuracy. The CP6 can also operate as a digital transport through coaxial and optical outputs when conversion is handled by an external DAC.

Bidirectional Bluetooth 5.4

A Qualcomm QCC3083 platform provides Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity in both receive and transmit modes. In receive mode, the CP6 supports SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and LDAC, allowing phones, tablets, and other wireless sources to feed its internal DAC and amplifier stages.

Transmit mode supports SBC, aptX, aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive, allowing CD playback and other supported CP6 sources to be sent directly to compatible Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Bluetooth therefore functions as both an input and an output rather than as a receive-only convenience feature.

Analog and digital output options

The CP6 can function as a self-contained headphone player, a line-level source, or a digital transport. Analog line output is available through both 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm connections, while coaxial and optical outputs provide digital connections to external converters and audio systems.

Combined with USB input and bidirectional Bluetooth, this gives the CP6 multiple signal-routing roles around the same CD transport and internal conversion architecture. A disc can be heard through the internal headphone stage, passed digitally to another DAC, sent over Bluetooth, or archived to compatible storage.

Battery and external DC operation

The internal 7300 mAh, 3.85 V lithium-ion battery is rated for up to 7.5 hours of playback. The CP6 can also operate from external DC power, with QC and PD fast-charging support and charge-and-play operation controlled by a TI BQ25895 charging-management circuit.

Battery and DC operation affect the available balanced output power, with the external supply allowing up to 1100 mW + 1100 mW into 32Ω and 1300 mW + 1300 mW into 16Ω. Users can therefore run the CP6 as a portable battery-powered player or connect external power when higher sustained output is required.

Aluminum chassis and direct controls

The enclosure is machined from 6063 aluminum alloy with a 180-grit sandblasted surface and hard-anodized finish. A damped lid is designed to remain open at different angles, while a tinted top window reduces direct laser exposure without obstructing normal disc operation.

A 2.3-inch, 76 × 284 display presents track information, playback status, and system settings. Dedicated transport keys, a textured volume wheel, and a Hold switch provide direct control of the core playback functions while reducing accidental input when the player is being carried.
