NEW: FIIO AIR STREAMING POWER AMP

integrates Roon Ready streaming, ESS decoding, and Class D power

The FiiO AIR AMP is a compact network streaming power amplifier that combines high-resolution decoding, local and network music playback, and speaker amplification in a single component. Its signal path pairs a 16-core XMOS XU316 USB interface with a dedicated ESS ES9020Q DAC and a TI TPA3255 Class D output stage, delivering up to 120W + 120W into 4Ω with the included 48V/5A power supply. Roon Ready, AirPlay, QPlay, NAS and USB storage playback, Bluetooth, wired digital inputs, and analog input allow AIR AMP to serve as the central component in bookshelf, desktop, and living-room two-channel systems.

TPA3255 amplification with post-filter feedback

The output stage is built around TI's TPA3255 Class D amplifier. With the supplied 48V/5A adapter, AIR AMP delivers at least 120W + 120W into 4Ω at less than 1% THD+N and at least 90W + 90W into 8Ω. The amplifier can also operate from a compatible 48V/10A supply, increasing maximum specified output to at least 235W + 235W into 4Ω at less than 10% THD+N.

A post-filter feedback, or PFFB, circuit takes the feedback signal after the Class D output filter rather than before it. This allows the control loop to compensate for behavior introduced by the filter and connected speaker load, reducing distortion while limiting frequency-response variation as loudspeaker impedance changes.

XMOS USB processing and dedicated ESS conversion

A 16-core XMOS XU316 handles USB audio reception and supports PCM playback up to 32-bit/768kHz along with native DSD512. Digital-to-analog conversion is performed by a dedicated ESS ES9020Q DAC before the signal reaches the amplification stage, separating USB processing and conversion into purpose-built stages within the digital signal path.

For local and network playback, the AIR AMP supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256. The coaxial input accepts PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz and DSD64, while optical input supports PCM up to 24-bit/96kHz.

Network, local storage, and wireless playback

The AIR AMP is Roon Ready and supports AirPlay and QPlay, providing several network-based routes from music libraries and compatible devices to the amplifier. Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi handles wireless network access, while gigabit Ethernet provides a wired connection for streaming and local-network playback.

Music can also be played directly from NAS storage, USB drives, and portable hard drives rather than relying on an external streaming service. The FiiO Control app provides browsing and playback control for locally stored music, including supported high-resolution files.

Bluetooth 5.2 reception supports SBC and LDAC. LDAC provides a higher-bandwidth Bluetooth option with compatible transmitting devices when direct wireless playback is preferable to a network connection.

Seven input paths and expandable outputs

The AIR AMP supports USB, optical, coaxial, Bluetooth, local storage playback, network streaming, and RCA line input. This allows computers, televisions, dedicated digital transports, mobile devices, analog sources, and network libraries to share the same amplifier without requiring a separate input-switching component.

Alongside its speaker terminals, the AIR AMP includes dedicated subwoofer and preamp outputs. The subwoofer connection allows an active subwoofer to be added to a two-channel speaker system, while the preamp output provides a line-level path to separate downstream amplification.

Component selection and power delivery

The analog and power sections use four WIMA film capacitors, two 2200μF Nichicon capacitors, four Rubycon film capacitors, and four ELNA coupling capacitors. These components are distributed through the amplifier's power-delivery and signal-conditioning stages rather than relying on the amplifier IC alone to manage supply filtering and analog coupling.

A 48V/5A adapter with a 7909 DC connector is included, supplying the power required for the specified 120W + 120W output into 4Ω without an additional power-supply purchase.

PEQ, tone control, and system adjustment

Sound adjustment is available through the FiiO Control app and a web interface. AIR AMP includes built-in EQ presets, AUTO EQ, and a 10-band parametric equalizer, allowing frequency, gain, and related filtering parameters to be adjusted for specific loudspeakers, room interactions, or target responses.

Independent bass and treble controls provide a ±10dB adjustment range for broader tonal changes without requiring individual PEQ bands to be edited. Everyday functions including input selection, volume adjustment, and EQ preset switching can also be controlled from the included infrared remote.

Compact integration

The AIR AMP measures approximately 8.15 x 7.40 x 1.65 in (207 x 188 x 42 mm) and includes a 1.1-inch LCD. By combining decoding, network access, local playback, source selection, EQ, preamplifier functions, and speaker amplification in one chassis, it can reduce the number of separate components required in a desktop, bookshelf, or compact living-room system.
