NEW: SJY ARGOS HEADPHONES & Apos x ES LAB HYDRA Amp

The Return of Classic Japanese HIFI

Today we’re happy to introduce the SJY ARGOS Electrostatic Headphones and the Apos x ES LAB HYDRA Integrated Amplifier, a pair of products that brings the philosophy of mid-century Japanese HIFI to the 2020s.

The story begins over sixty years ago, when Japan’s STAX introduced the SR-1 Electrostatic headphones, which gave listeners an experience of detail that conventional headphones struggled to match. Today, that appeal is resurging. In a market crowded with headphones that tout elaborate features and digital processing, e-stats offer the inverse: an experience that is both sonically exceptional and conceptually simple.

One amplifier for everything

While most amplifiers are single-purpose creatures, the HYDRA acts as several amplifiers in one, powering electrostatics, planars, dynamics, and passive speakers. It combines a 580V energizer and a Class AB conventional amp that delivers 20W per channel into 8Ω. Where other systems require an army of amps, the HYDRA combines them into one many-headed machine.

The electrostatic section uses a low-noise generator to supply the 580V DC bias required by compatible 5-pin Pro Bias headphones. A pair of Japanese-made step-up transformers handles the voltage swing needed to drive electrostatic transducers, giving the HYDRA a dedicated high-voltage path rather than treating electrostatic support as an afterthought.

For conventional headphones and speakers, the HYDRA uses a Class AB composite amplifier circuit built with high-precision Vishay MELF resistors and selected premium audio capacitors. Output is rated at 20W per channel into 8Ω, with 20dB of gain and THD+N of 0.0016% at 1kHz, 10W into 8Ω.

The all-seeing e-stat

Named after Argos Panoptes, the many-eyed monster of mythology, the ARGOS takes in the whole picture. Its 580V Pro Bias electrostatic driver delivers the speed, imaging, separation, and detail the format is known for, while a natural, slightly warm tuning brings more body to bass, more presence to vocals, and more texture across the spectrum. It’s a presentation that feels panoramic in scope, revealing the full field of the recording with remarkable spatial awareness.

The ARGOS uses a 6,375 mm² electrostatic transducer with a vented driver design. The venting relieves pressure around the transducer, allowing the diaphragm to move more freely and consistently. The architecture preserves the quick transient behavior electrostatics are known for while supporting the fuller tonal balance that defines the ARGOS.
