NEW: FIIO FT7 Planar Magnetic Open-Back Headphones

106mm Open Back Planar

The FiiO FT7 is an open-back planar magnetic headphone built around a newly developed 106mm proprietary planar driver. At the center of its design is a 1μm ultra-thin diaphragm developed through two years of in-house research and development, paired with a dual-sided push-pull magnetic system and a multi-layer gold-and-silver coated conductor structure. With a frequency response rated from 5Hz to 40kHz, 25Ω impedance, and 94dB/mW sensitivity, the FT7 is designed for listeners seeking the speed, low distortion characteristics, and large-scale presentation associated with high-performance planar magnetic headphones.

A 1μm diaphragm and 106mm planar driver

The FT7's proprietary 106mm planar driver uses an ultra-thin 1μm diaphragm, which is notably lighter than conventional planar diaphragms. Lower moving mass allows the diaphragm to start and stop more rapidly in response to the incoming signal, helping it reproduce fine transient information and high-frequency detail with greater precision. The large diaphragm surface area also enables air to be moved efficiently across the audible spectrum while maintaining the controlled motion expected from a planar magnetic design.

FiiO combines the diaphragm with its self-developed planar driver technology and a patented multi-layer coating system. The driver uses a high-performance PET substrate with selectively applied 24K gold and pure silver layers. By incorporating both materials into the conductive structure, FiiO aims to balance conductivity characteristics while maintaining the low-mass requirements necessary for a fast-responding planar driver.

Dual-sided magnetic architecture

The FT7 employs a dual-sided push-pull magnetic circuit featuring 18 N52 neodymium magnets—nine on each side of the diaphragm. The system generates magnetic flux densities of up to 1.5T, providing the driving force required to maintain precise diaphragm control across its large surface area. Push-pull magnetic arrangements apply force more uniformly across the diaphragm, helping reduce unwanted resonances and supporting consistent motion throughout the driver's operating range.

FiiO's patented uniform magnetic field design expands the effective magnetic field surrounding the diaphragm while also contributing to reduced driver weight. Increasing magnetic efficiency improves driver sensitivity, allowing the diaphragm to achieve the required output levels with greater control over its movement. This combination supports rapid transient response and controlled low-frequency reproduction while maintaining the benefits of a large-format planar driver.

Cable and construction details

The supplied 3-meter cable combines over-6N OCC monocrystalline copper conductors with a week-long liquid nitrogen cryogenic treatment. According to FiiO, the process is intended to relieve internal stress within the conductor structure and improve crystal boundary consistency. The cable uses a low-dielectric PFA insulator with a dielectric constant of 2.1, reducing stored electrical energy within the insulation and helping preserve signal transmission characteristics.

The FT7's physical construction combines a carbon-fiber headband with zebra wood grilles to balance rigidity, durability, and weight. At approximately 15 ounces, the headphone remains relatively lightweight for a large planar magnetic design. Two sets of ear pads—lambskin and suede—are included, allowing users to tailor comfort and fit according to personal preference.
