ROHM DAC CHIP FLAGSHIP

The VMV D3R is a desktop DAC and fully balanced analog preamplifier built around a dual-mono ROHM BD34302EKV DAC architecture, a 10MHz OCXO reference clock, and an independent power design with dual toroidal transformers. It supports PCM up to 768kHz, native DSD512, and full MQA decoding across USB, optical, coaxial, AES, and I²S inputs. Combined with balanced and single-ended outputs, Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, and analog volume control, the D3R is designed to serve as both a high-resolution digital source and a control center for two-channel systems.

Dual ROHM DAC architecture and balanced signal path

The D3R uses two ROHM BD34302EKV DAC chips operating independently for the left and right channels. This dual-mono arrangement improves channel separation while reducing interaction between channels throughout the conversion stage. The design is paired with a fully balanced signal path that extends from the DAC stage through the analog volume control and out to the XLR outputs.

The balanced topology helps reject common-mode noise and maintain signal integrity when connected to balanced downstream equipment. As a preamplifier, the D3R can feed a power amplifier directly, eliminating the need for a separate line-stage component in systems built around digital sources.

Precision clocking and independent power regulation

A built-in 10MHz OCXO (Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator) clock provides ±3ppb stability by maintaining a controlled operating temperature. This minimizes frequency drift and reduces timing errors that contribute to jitter and phase noise. Stable clock performance is particularly important in high-resolution digital playback, where conversion accuracy depends on precise timing throughout the signal chain.

Power is supplied through two custom toroidal transformers dedicated to the digital and analog sections. Separating these circuits reduces interference generated by digital processing activity, helping maintain a lower noise floor within the analog stages. The architecture is intended to provide consistent performance regardless of the active input source.

High-resolution decoding and wireless connectivity

An XMOS XU-316 processor handles USB audio duties with support for asynchronous USB 2.0 operation, PCM playback up to 768kHz at 32-bit depth, and native DSD512. MQA and MQA-CD decoding are supported across USB, optical, coaxial, and AES inputs. I²S supports native DSD transmission, while coaxial and optical inputs support DoP playback.

Wireless playback is handled by a Qualcomm Bluetooth 5.4 chipset with support for LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, AAC, and SBC codecs. LDAC transmission supports audio streams up to 96kHz/24-bit, allowing high-resolution wireless playback without requiring a wired connection.

Interface, automation, and system integration

A 3.49-inch tempered glass color display provides playback information and track metadata during Bluetooth operation. Navigation is handled through the front-panel control interface, with commonly used functions accessible without extensive menu navigation.

The integrated “BEST SET” function automatically configures playback parameters including filter behavior, sampling strategies, and gain settings based on the incoming signal. Connectivity includes USB-B, USB-C, optical, coaxial, AES/EBU, Bluetooth, and I²S inputs, along with RCA and XLR outputs. A dedicated 10MHz clock input allows the D3R to be integrated into systems using an external master clock.
