NEW FROM FIIO: DM15 R2R CD PLAYER

FiiO DM15R2R NOW AVAILABLE

The FiiO DM15R2R is a portable CD player built around a discrete R2R ladder DAC, a high-voltage lithium battery, and both single-ended and balanced outputs. It functions as a standalone disc player, a USB DAC, a Bluetooth transmitter, and a digital source for speakers or amplifiers. With THD+N under 0.030%, an SNR of at least 112dB, and flexible analog and digital I/O, it serves listeners who want CD playback in a compact, desk-friendly unit that can also move easily from room to room.

A portable disc player built for modern systems

The DM15R2R treats disc playback as one part of a broader signal chain. It can operate as a conventional portable CD player, but it also outputs digital audio over optical and coaxial, transmits Bluetooth, and works as a USB DAC. This combination allows you to integrate CDs into systems that typically rely on streaming devices or dedicated DACs. The transparent window provides a direct look at the disc during playback, while the aluminum enclosure keeps vibration low and handling stable.

R2R decoding and measurable performance

At the center of the player is FiiO’s self-developed R2R DAC. Instead of using a delta-sigma chip, it performs digital-to-analog conversion through a resistor ladder that generates waveforms directly. This approach tends to produce a smoother transition between sample values and a more continuous presentation of dynamics. The unit’s measured figures—THD+N below 0.030% at 1kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 112dB—place it solidly within the range expected of compact ladder-based designs. Those numbers help keep low-level detail intact and maintain stability during quiet passages.

Battery design and power behavior

The DM15R2R is powered by a 4700mAh lithium battery operating at 3.85V. The higher operating voltage supports a stronger output swing, which is useful when driving headphones with moderate current demands. Playback runs for roughly seven hours, and PD3.0 fast charging restores the battery in about two hours. The design emphasizes real portability rather than tethered desktop use, though the player can operate in a desk-oriented mode for sustained output when paired with balanced headphones or an amplifier.

Analog outputs for headphones and line use

Two analog outputs are built in: a 3.5mm single-ended port and a 4.4mm balanced port, each backed by dedicated amplification. In desktop mode, the balanced output can deliver up to 1150mW per channel, providing ample current for full-size headphones. The single-ended output supplies a lighter signal more suitable for efficient portable models. Both 3.5mm and 4.4mm line-out modes are also available for routing the CD signal into active speakers or an external amplifier without passing through the headphone stage.

Bluetooth transmission for wireless listening

When wireless operation is needed, the DM15R2R can transmit Bluetooth audio to headphones or speakers using SBC, aptX, aptX-HD, aptX-LL, and aptX-Adaptive. This is helpful when moving around the house or when cables would interfere with daily tasks. Although Bluetooth introduces compression compared to line or balanced outputs, the feature extends the utility of CDs into situations where tethered listening isn’t practical.

Anti-vibration support and transport stability

The ESP switch provides electronic shock protection that stabilizes disc reading when the player is moved or jostled. It minimizes data interruption and skipping during walking or repositioning. Once stationary, the system continues to read reliably whether the ESP function is enabled or not, allowing users to choose based on environment rather than necessity.

Remote control for flexible placement

An included infrared remote gives basic transport control—track skip, pause, stop, and mode selection—when the player is out of reach. This is particularly useful when the DM15R2R is serving as a source for speakers or an amplifier on a shelf or desk. It keeps operational friction low while maintaining consistent playback.
