New From FiiO: JT7 Open-Back Planar Magnetic Headphones

JT7 planar headphones

The JT7 is an open-back planar magnetic headphone designed to make large-format planar technology more practical for daily listening. At only $109.99, it combines a 95×86 mm proprietary planar driver, a 3 µm diaphragm, and a high-sensitivity magnetic system in a frame that folds and stays relatively light at 318 g. The result is a planar headphone that is easier to drive than many traditional designs and comfortable enough for long sessions at a desk or on the move between listening spaces.

Rather than chasing novelty, the JT7 focuses on execution—driver control, diaphragm behavior, magnetic efficiency, and ergonomics. It is tuned for clarity and energy, with an emphasis on stable transients, coherent staging, and consistent performance across a wide range of sources, from compact players to dedicated desktop amplifiers.

Large-format planar driver design

At the core of the JT7 is a 95×86 mm planar magnetic driver developed entirely in-house. Large diaphragm area matters in planar designs because it allows force to be distributed more evenly across the diaphragm surface. When the electromagnetic field is uniform, the diaphragm moves as a whole rather than in sections, which helps reduce distortion and preserves image stability as volume increases.

3 µm ultra-thin diaphragm behavior

The JT7 uses a diaphragm just 3 µm thick. Diaphragm thickness directly affects inertia—the resistance to motion when the signal changes. A thinner film accelerates and decelerates more quickly, allowing it to follow rapid voltage swings with greater precision.

This fast response shows up most clearly in the upper frequencies. Treble information arrives cleanly, with edges that sound defined rather than softened. Microdynamic shifts—small changes in intensity within a note—are easier to perceive because the diaphragm is not lagging behind the signal.

F.E.S. elastic system and diaphragm control

To manage stress across such a thin diaphragm, the JT7 incorporates what it calls the F.E.S. elastic system. The diaphragm surface features multi-dimensional texturing that increases elasticity and distributes mechanical strain more evenly during movement.

The benefit is control rather than excess movement. Low frequencies gain depth and weight without becoming loose, and quieter information remains intact even when the driver is asked to move more air. This balance between compliance and restraint is critical in planar designs, especially when targeting higher sensitivity.

Integrated 28 nm manufacturing process

The JT7’s diaphragm and voice coil are produced using a chip-grade 28 nm fabrication process, integrating both into a single, unified structure. Fine coil traces improve consistency from unit to unit while reducing mechanical losses that can occur when separate elements flex or shift over time.

Durability is part of the goal here. By minimizing interfaces between components, the driver maintains stable performance not just initially, but across extended use. This kind of manufacturing approach prioritizes repeatability and long-term reliability over short-term spectacle.

Two-way high-density magnet array

A two-way neodymium iron boron magnet layout surrounds the diaphragm, generating a strong and efficient magnetic field. Magnet strength and geometry determine how effectively electrical energy is converted into motion, and here the focus is sensitivity and control.

With a rated sensitivity of 92 dB/mW, the JT7 reaches usable listening levels from a wide range of sources. It does not demand a high-power amplifier to sound coherent, which makes it more adaptable to compact DAC/amp combinations and portable balanced outputs. Even when driven lightly, the tonal balance stays intact.

Lightweight foldable construction

Planar headphones often carry a weight penalty due to magnet assemblies. At approximately 318 g, the JT7 sits on the lighter side for its category. This matters during long listening sessions, where cumulative pressure can distract from the music itself.

The foldable frame uses smoothly rotating joints that allow the headphone to collapse without stressing the yokes. Storage and transport become straightforward, especially for listeners who move between home and office or travel with a dedicated player.

Four-axis ergonomic headband

The headband assembly allows movement across four axes, helping the ear pads align naturally with different head shapes. Proper alignment improves the acoustic seal and keeps the planar driver positioned consistently relative to the ear.

Consistency matters in planar headphones because small shifts can alter perceived balance. With the JT7, tonal delivery remains stable even as you lean back, turn your head, or settle into a long session.

Serviceable pads and cabling

Comfort interfaces are designed to be replaceable. The breathable mesh pads and headband cushion detach for cleaning or replacement, extending the usable life of the headphone and allowing wear characteristics to be refreshed over time.

The dual 3.5 mm detachable cable system supports flexibility in amplification. The included cables cover 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced connections, along with a 6.3 mm adapter for traditional desktop amplifiers. Signal paths remain short and stable, with minimal added resistance.

Hi-Res Audio certification and bandwidth

The JT7 carries Hi-Res Audio certification, confirming extended frequency response up to 40 kHz and low distortion within that range. While content above the audible band is not directly perceived as pitch, wide bandwidth helps reduce phase shift and roll-off within the audible spectrum.

For high-resolution recordings, this means preserved harmonic structure and cleaner decay tails. Quiet details remain audible against silence rather than being masked by distortion or early attenuation.
