NEW CD Player ALL-in-One

The SMSL PL200 MK2 is an all-in-one CD player, USB DAC, headphone amplifier, and Bluetooth transmitter designed for desktop and component Hi-Fi systems. Built around the ESS ES9039Q2M DAC, SMSL's proprietary PASS High-Precision Servo Architecture, and the company's patented PLFC fully balanced headphone amplifier, it combines physical media playback with modern high-resolution digital audio support. With balanced analog outputs, dedicated transport functionality, comprehensive digital connectivity, and bidirectional Bluetooth, the PL200 MK2 can serve as a complete desktop audio hub or integrate into a larger two-channel system.

An integrated digital audio hub

The PL200 MK2 combines CD playback, USB DAC functionality, Bluetooth reception and transmission, and a dedicated headphone amplifier within a compact aluminum chassis. USB-C input supports PCM audio up to 32-bit/768kHz, native DSD512, and up to 8× MQA unfolding through the ESS ES9039Q2M DAC, allowing the unit to accommodate both physical media and high-resolution digital sources.

Balanced XLR and RCA analog outputs are complemented by optical and coaxial digital outputs, making it equally suitable as a standalone player or as part of a larger Hi-Fi system. An external clock input further expands integration options for users incorporating the PL200 MK2 into more advanced digital audio chains.

ESS ES9039Q2M DAC and measured performance

The ESS ES9039Q2M DAC is paired with carefully implemented analog circuitry and multiple low-noise voltage regulator stages. The balanced outputs achieve THD+N as low as 0.000079% (-122dB, unweighted), with up to 127dB dynamic range and 127dB signal-to-noise ratio. RCA outputs measure up to 124dB for both dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio, reflecting the implementation of the converter, analog output stage, and power supply.

PASS precision CD transport

SMSL's proprietary PASS High-Precision Servo Architecture continuously manages spindle motor speed, focus, tracking, and radial balance through closed-loop control. Combined with a rigid transport mechanism and multi-point vibration damping, the system reduces mechanical disturbances during playback while maintaining accurate data retrieval from optical discs before digital conversion.

The transparent top-loading disc cover provides direct access to the transport while preserving the tactile operation associated with dedicated CD players.

Dedicated transport mode

Transport Mode disables the internal DAC and headphone amplifier circuits, allowing the PL200 MK2 to operate as a dedicated CD transport. Optical, coaxial, and Bluetooth digital outputs remain active, providing a digital signal for external DACs or processors while reducing unnecessary electrical activity inside the unit.

Patented fully balanced headphone amplifier

The integrated headphone amplifier uses SMSL's patented PLFC fully balanced amplifier design with discrete circuitry. Front-panel 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs support a wide variety of headphones, while selectable Low (+4dB) and High (+8dB) gain settings allow the amplifier to better match different headphone sensitivities and impedance ranges.

The amplifier delivers up to 1.5W × 2 into 16Ω, 750mW × 2 into 32Ω, 160mW × 2 into 150Ω, 80mW × 2 into 300Ω, and 40mW × 2 into 600Ω, providing consistent output across both portable headphones and higher-impedance designs.

Bidirectional Bluetooth connectivity

A Qualcomm Bluetooth 5.1 platform supports SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC codecs for wireless reception from compatible mobile devices. The PL200 MK2 also functions as a Bluetooth transmitter, allowing audio from CDs or USB sources to be transmitted wirelessly to compatible headphones or speakers without requiring additional hardware.

Construction and user interface

The precision-machined aluminum chassis houses multiple low-noise voltage regulation stages for stable power delivery throughout the system. Gold-plated connectors are used across the rear panel to provide durable connections for desktop and component Hi-Fi installations.

A fully laminated IPS color display presents playback information, audio format, and system status through a redesigned interface. During Bluetooth playback from supported mobile devices, synchronized song lyrics can also be displayed.
