SMSL VMV A1 Class-A Amplifier
A firehose of analog brawniness
In 2020, SMSL celebrated its tenth birthday with the launch of the Tabebuia passive bookshelf speakers. These coral-colored units were cryptically touted as the first step in the company’s new “blueprint,” prompting some to wonder about the company’s future. That future has become a bit clearer in 2021 with the launch of the SMSL VMV A1 Class-A amplifier.
Boasting massive power, nominal distortion, and a minimalistic feature set, the VMV A1 is a firehose of analog brawniness. First of all: it’s powerful. How powerful? 15Wx2(4Ω), or enough to warrant an on-screen temperature display. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to run a single-ended pair of high-impedance headphones or bookshelf speakers.
The SMSL VMV A1 is a class-A amplifier. Using simple circuits that draw the same amount of current and consume the same amount of energy whether receiving a signal or not, this is the most straightforward of amplifier types. It isn’t subject to electromagnetic interference caused by digital components, so its total harmonic distortion and signal-to-noise ratio are exceptionally low.
Massive power for bookshelf speakers and headphones
With 15Wx2 (4Ω) and 2Wx2 (32Ω), the VMV A1 can power passive bookshelf speakers as easily as a pair of headphones. And its precision potentiometer offers razor-thin adjustments to volume for maximum modifiability.
Fierceness of design
Sharing the same spear-ended feet and chin-up tilt as the Tabebuia bookshelf speakers, the VMV A1 exudes a design philosophy of fierceness. Think vampire fangs, eagle talons, and tiger claws. The VMV A1 is a machine of fearsome power, inside and out.
