Cayin ID6 Streamer DAC and Headphone Amplifier
Cayin ID6 dual ESS ES9082Q streamer DAC
The Cayin ID6 combines network streaming, high-resolution digital conversion, preamplification, and headphone amplification in a single desktop component. Its Android 14 platform supports system-wide bit-perfect playback, while dual ESS ES9082Q DACs, a 16-core XMOS USB processor, dual 12AU7 tubes, and a four-channel fully-balanced headphone amplifier handle the audio path. Three selectable timbres, Class A and Class AB operation, extensive digital connectivity, and local SSD support give the ID6 a broad role in both headphone and two-channel systems.
Three selectable timbres
The ID6 provides Classic Tube, Modern Tube, and Solid-State timbres across its headphone outputs, RCA and XLR line outputs, and preamp outputs. Its tube stage pairs two 12AU7 dual-triode tubes with MOS-FETs. Classic Tube is voiced for a warmer, smoother presentation, while Modern Tube emphasizes a more expansive soundstage, tighter bass, and greater incisiveness. Solid-State prioritizes resolution and precision. A dedicated front-panel window keeps the tubes visible during operation.
Fully-balanced headphone amplification
A four-channel fully-balanced discrete headphone amplifier uses Nexperia audio-grade BJT transistors for current gain and output duties. The ID6 supports both Class A and Class AB amplification through its Dual Amp Operation architecture, allowing the output stage to be matched to different listening preferences. A DC-Servo circuit helps control offset and maintain low-distortion output.
The 4.4 mm balanced headphone output delivers up to 4.0 W + 4.0 W into 16 ohms and 2.6 W + 2.6 W into 32 ohms. A 6.35 mm single-ended headphone output is also provided, rated up to 1.6 W + 1.6 W into 16 ohms and 0.9 W + 0.9 W into 32 ohms.
Dual ESS DAC architecture
Two ESS ES9082Q SMART Hi-Fi DACs operate in dedicated mono configurations, giving the left and right channels independent conversion paths. Cayin also uses channel summing across each DAC's multi-channel output architecture to support high dynamic range, strong channel separation, and low measured distortion.
High-resolution USB processing
A 16-core XMOS XU316 processor handles USB audio with native UAC 2.0 and UAC 1.0 support. Its asynchronous transfer architecture and precision clocking are designed to reduce jitter and limit the influence of source-side noise. The USB implementation supports compatibility across Windows, macOS, Android, Linux, and other major platforms.
Android 14 with bit-perfect playback
Cayin has customized Android 14 from the low-level drivers through the audio framework to support system-wide bit-perfect playback, including through third-party applications. USB Audio and I²S digital paths support PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and Native DSD512.
Streaming and wireless playback
Dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi supports online streaming and network playback, including DLNA, AirPlay, and Wi-Fi song transfer. Popular Android streaming apps such as Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music can run directly on the player. Bluetooth 5.1 is handled by a Qualcomm QCC5125 platform with support for aptX HD, aptX, aptX Low Latency, LDAC, AAC, and SBC. External high-gain antennas are included to strengthen both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Flexible local storage
A dedicated M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD bay provides an option for high-capacity internal music storage. The SSD is sold separately. Music can also be played from built-in storage, USB drives, external hard drives, and card readers, giving the ID6 several ways to manage local libraries alongside network streaming.
Digital and analog system integration
The ID6 can function as a streamer, DAC, preamplifier, headphone amplifier, or digital source for another DAC. Balanced XLR and single-ended RCA connections provide both fixed line-level and variable preamp output. Digital output options include I²S-LVDS, coaxial, optical, and USB Audio.
Independent power supplies
A custom toroidal transformer feeds independent power supplies for the digital and analog sections. High-efficiency DC-DC regulation, low-noise linear regulators, and polymer molybdenum filter capacitors are used to suppress ripple and circuit noise across the audio path.
Six-inch touchscreen interface
The front panel uses a 6-inch (15.2 cm) 1080 × 2160 FHD+ touchscreen with a landscape interface and multi-touch control. A dedicated ADC feedback circuit analyzes audio in real time to support spectrum visualization and VU meter displays. The Cayin Control App also provides access to functions including timbre selection, playback settings, and device control.
Precision control
The volume knob is tuned for smooth, controlled resistance and incorporates an illuminated ring that indicates the current audio format. Color coding identifies sample-rate groups from 44.1/48 kHz through 705.6/768 kHz, along with DSD playback.
