Matrix MD-1 Integrated Amplifier
Wireless network streaming power amplifier
The Matrix Audio MD-1 and MD-1P combine a full-featured network streamer with a high-power stereo amplifier in a single chassis, giving you Roon Ready playback, HDMI ARC, Wi-Fi 6, HD Bluetooth, NVMe storage, and serious output power for passive speakers. One component, a pair of speakers, and you have a clean, modern Hi-Fi system that handles vinyl, TV, streaming services, local files, and CD rips without extra boxes.
Minimalist streaming hub for passive speakers
The MD-1 and MD-1P are designed to replace stacks of separates with one focused component that lives at the heart of your listening room. They integrate a streamer, DAC, preamp, and power amplifier, so you can connect passive speakers directly and handle every source from one front panel and one remote. You get a simple signal path, fewer cables, and a calmer shelf or rack without sacrificing flexibility.
Power that matches real-world speakers
The MD-1 delivers 150 W per channel into 8 ohms, while the MD-1P doubles that to 300 W per channel into 8 ohms. That means you can pair them confidently with both compact bookshelf designs and demanding floor-standers. High-efficiency amplification keeps energy use and heat down even at higher playback levels, so long listening sessions feel relaxed and controlled rather than hot and stressed.
Dual-speaker output made practical
The MD-1P adds a second set of binding posts, giving you two pairs of speaker outputs on the same amplifier. You can connect two pairs of speakers at once and switch between them via the included IR remote, which is ideal for A/B comparisons or for sharing one amplifier between a main listening area and a secondary pair in the same room. Gold-plated solid pure copper terminals keep resistance low and grip cables securely, preserving fine detail and dynamic nuance.
Mastering-grade AKM DAC with VELVETSOUND
An AK4493SEQ DAC chip with AKM’s VELVETSOUND architecture handles digital-to-analog conversion for both networked and physical sources. It supports up to 32-bit 768 kHz PCM and high-rate DSD, so high-resolution files from local storage and streaming platforms are decoded without downsampling. With a dynamic range up to 120 dB and very low harmonic distortion, it presents a clear, low-fatigue sound that still feels natural and warm.
Clocking and FPGA for cleaner timing
Inside the digital section, a high-speed FPGA works alongside dual custom femtosecond clocks—one for 44.1 kHz families and one for 48 kHz families. This division keeps the timing reference closely aligned to the source format and reduces phase jitter, which in turn can improve imaging and low-level detail. The result is a presentation that feels stable and spacious, with precise localization across the stereo field.
Precision preamp volume and balance
Instead of a traditional analog pot, the MD-1 and MD-1P use a digitally controlled analog volume architecture with 256 steps from -80 dB to +12 dB in 0.5 dB increments. You get fine control at low levels without one channel dropping out or wandering. A 12-step channel balance control lets you compensate for small differences in speaker placement or room asymmetry, so the center image stays locked where you actually sit.
Preamp and subwoofer integration
Preamp outputs and subwoofer outputs share volume control with the main speaker outputs, so adding external power amplifiers or subwoofers feels straightforward. Low-frequency output is filtered to carry content below 150 Hz, which helps active subs integrate more cleanly with your main speakers. The MD-1P offers dual sub outputs for larger rooms or dual-sub systems, and a trigger interface allows synchronized power control with connected active components.
Vinyl-ready MM phono input
A dedicated moving magnet phono stage with a low-noise RIAA curve is built in, so you can connect a turntable’s phono output directly. There is no need for an external phono preamp or extra cables. If you are just starting with records, this keeps the path into vinyl simple. If you already have a turntable dialed in, the MD-1 and MD-1P give it a direct lane into your main system.
Balanced and single-ended line inputs with bypass
The MD-1 and MD-1P include balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog inputs, making it easy to integrate everything from studio interfaces to classic line-level sources. A dedicated bypass mode lets the unit operate as a pure power amplifier, passing incoming analog signals directly to the power stage with volume handled upstream. That makes it flexible for use with external preamps or multichannel home cinema processors.
Digital inputs for the whole living room
Up to four optical and coaxial digital inputs give you room for set-top boxes, game consoles, disc players, and streamers. An HDMI ARC connection lets your TV send audio directly to the MD-1 or MD-1P, so film soundtracks and shows play through your main speakers instead of TV drivers. USB audio support covers a computer source, letting you run a single cable from a laptop or desktop into the amplifier for bit-perfect playback from your preferred player.
HD Bluetooth when convenience matters
When casual listening is the goal, Bluetooth 5.0 with high-resolution codecs keeps wireless playback viable. Support for LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, AAC, and SBC means you can stream from phones, tablets, and laptops at up to 96 kHz where supported, with minimal compression. It is a simple way to share music with guests or to play something quickly without opening an app on the front panel.
Networked for serious streaming
Gigabit Ethernet support provides a stable path for high-rate PCM and DSD playback from local servers, online services, and other network sources. If running cable is not practical, Wi-Fi 6 offers fast and resilient wireless networking that can keep up with high-resolution streaming. In both cases, the MD-1 and MD-1P act as the networked center of your listening room rather than a peripheral device.
Software that feels familiar
Built on the same streaming hardware platform as Matrix Audio’s M Series, the MD-1 and MD-1P run the MA Player Hi-Fi Streaming OS and work with the MA Remote app on iOS and Android. From your phone or tablet, you can browse music libraries, change inputs, and manage playback without leaving the listening position. The front-panel display mirrors that control with clear status information and album art.
Streaming services and protocols
Out of the box, the MD-1 and MD-1P support native clients or integrations for services like TIDAL, Qobuz, HIGHRESAUDIO, and internet radio stations. They also tie into a wider ecosystem via Roon Ready support, Audirvana integration, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, QPlay, and UPnP/DLNA. Whether you keep your library on a NAS, stream from the cloud, or mix both approaches, the amplifier slots into that pattern without friction.
Shareable internal storage and NAS mode
A bottom-mounted NVMe SSD slot lets you add fast internal storage that behaves more like a quiet, audio-focused server than a general-purpose computer. The SSD has its own low-noise power supply to minimize electrical hash inside the chassis. Using the SMB protocol, computers on the same network can read and write to this storage, so maintaining your library feels like working with any shared drive. The MD-1 and MD-1P can also present that storage to other streamers on the network, acting as a small NAS for your music.
CD library, digitized and organized
By connecting a USB CD drive and using the MA Remote app, you can rip CDs directly to the internal SSD. The amplifier converts discs to digital files and adds them to the onboard library, so you keep the ritual of loading a disc while gaining the convenience of indexed, instant playback. Over time, shelves of discs become a browsable, lossless library that any supported control app can access.
