R-2R Conversion with Optional Network Playback: Meet the DR80 Series

The AUDALYTIC DR80 and DR80n are two versions of a desktop digital-to-analog converter that combines proprietary 26-bit complementary R-2R conversion with a dedicated native 1-bit DSD decoding path. Both include analog volume control, balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs, and digital inputs for computers, transports, and wireless sources. The DR80 connects to your existing digital sources, while the DR80n adds an integrated CelWare network bridge for network playback.

Separate conversion paths for PCM and DSD

For PCM playback, discrete R-2R modules convert digital information into an analog signal by switching a precision resistor network. Closely matched resistors support the accuracy of the 26-bit complementary architecture, while custom FPGA logic handles clock management and digital shaping. Three digital filters and a selectable NOS mode provide additional playback options.

DSD recordings have their own conversion path. With DSD Direct enabled, the incoming bitstream feeds a 1-bit switch-array decoder and bypasses PCM conversion throughout. USB and the DR80n’s network bridge support native DSD up to DSD1024, while a compatible I2S source can supply native DSD up to DSD2048.

USB developed with Amanero

Both models use a custom USB audio interface developed by GUSTARD and Italy’s Amanero. Its ARM Cortex-M7 processor supports the processing requirements of high-rate playback, accepting PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz, native DSD1024, and DoP up to DSD512.

Coaxial and optical inputs accommodate digital transports at PCM resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz, along with DSD64 over DoP. The I2S input extends PCM support to 32-bit/1536kHz and offers four selectable pinout modes for matching compatible sources. Its HDMI-style connector carries I2S audio only; it does not support HDMI audio/video or ARC/eARC.

Network playback on the DR80n only

The DR80n adds a CelWare network bridge co-developed with Cel Audio, along with LAN connectivity and a microSD slot. Its platform supports Roon Bridge, AirPlay, UPnP, HQPlayer NAA, Qobuz Connect, and TME Connect. Network playback supports the same maximum PCM, native DSD, and DoP rates as USB.

Dedicated playback hardware runs CelWare 5.x, whose optimized Linux kernel uses hardware-priority scheduling for the audio path. Unused bridge protocols can be disabled through dr80.local in a Windows or Mac browser, or through the Bridge app for Android and iOS.

Analog volume control and simultaneous outputs

An analog volume-control IC provides level adjustment for connection to downstream amplification. A true bypass mode accommodates systems that already have a volume control. With volume fixed, the balanced XLR outputs deliver 4Vrms and the single-ended RCA outputs deliver 2Vrms.

Both output types can operate simultaneously, allowing connections to two downstream components. Each has a specified output impedance of 100Ω. Published performance figures include dynamic range greater than 114dB, SNR greater than 115dB, and THD+N of 0.003% or less at 1kHz.

Clocking, power, and everyday controls

A CK-01 femto-grade clock module supplies timing for the DAC. Segmented filtering and multiple regulated power rails help limit interference between circuit sections. Both models include an internal low-noise power supply and an external DC input accepting 12–15V from a supply rated for at least 2A.

For wireless playback, a Qualcomm QCC5125 chipset provides Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC, AAC, SBC, aptX, aptX LL, and aptX HD support. Front-panel touch controls and IR remote support provide access to adjustments, while the LCD offers adjustable brightness and a sleep mode. Both models come in black or silver anodized aluminum.
