NEW: CAYIN ID6 DESKTOP STREAMER/DAC/AMP
The Cayin ID6 combines streaming, dual ESS DACs, and tube amplification
The Cayin ID6 is a desktop streamer, DAC, preamplifier, and headphone amplifier with dual ESS ES9082Q DACs and an Android 14 platform. Its analog stage offers three selectable timbres—Classic Tube, Modern Tube, and Solid-State—alongside switchable Class A and Class AB headphone amplification. Network streaming, expandable local storage, and fixed or variable analog outputs make it suited to standalone headphone listening and integration with a two-channel system.
Three timbres across the analog outputs
The ID6 makes its Classic Tube, Modern Tube, and Solid-State timbres available through the headphone, line, and preamp outputs. The tube stage combines two 12AU7 dual triodes with MOS-FETs, with a front-panel window displaying the tubes during operation.
Balanced amplification with two operating classes
A four-channel fully-balanced discrete headphone amplifier uses Nexperia audio-grade BJT transistors for current gain and output duties. Cayin’s Dual Amp Operation architecture provides selectable Class A and Class AB operation, while a DC-Servo circuit helps control output offset.
The 4.4 mm balanced output supplies up to 4.0 W per channel into 16Ω and 2.6 W per channel into 32Ω. The 6.35 mm single-ended output delivers up to 1.6 W per channel into 16Ω and 0.9 W per channel into 32Ω. Cayin specifies A-weighted balanced headphone performance of 122 dB dynamic range, 121 dB SNR, and 0.005% THD+N in Solid-State mode. The corresponding tube-mode figures are 117 dB, 116 dB, and 0.20%.
Independent conversion for each channel
Two ESS ES9082Q SMART Hi-Fi DACs operate in dedicated mono configurations, giving the left and right channels separate conversion paths. Channel summing across each DAC’s multi-channel output architecture supports dynamic range, channel separation, and low measured distortion.
A 16-core XMOS XU316 processor handles USB audio through an asynchronous transfer architecture with precision clocking. It supports UAC 2.0 and UAC 1.0 for compatibility with Windows, macOS, Android, Linux, and other platforms. The USB Audio and I²S paths support PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and Native DSD512.
Android streaming with system-wide bit-perfect playback
Cayin has customized Android 14 from the low-level drivers through the audio framework to support system-wide bit-perfect playback, including through third-party applications. The Rockchip RK3576 octa-core processor handles the operating system and interface. The supplied specifications list four Cortex-A72 cores running at up to 2.2 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at up to 2.0 GHz.
Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music can run directly on the ID6. Dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet provide network connectivity, with support for DLNA, AirPlay, and Wi-Fi song transfer.
Wireless playback and expandable music storage
A Qualcomm QCC5125 platform provides Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, aptX Low Latency, AAC, and SBC support. External high-gain antennas are included for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
For local libraries, the ID6 includes an M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD bay—the SSD is sold separately. Playback also supports built-in storage, USB drives, external hard drives, and card readers, allowing locally stored music and streaming services to be accessed from the same component.
Connections for headphones and two-channel systems
Balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs support both fixed line-level operation and variable preamplification. The XLR line output is rated at 4.0 Vrms and the RCA line output at 2.0 Vrms into 47 kΩ. Maximum preamp output is 12.0 Vrms through XLR and 6.0 Vrms through RCA into the same load, providing different voltage ranges for connection to downstream amplification.
Coaxial, optical, USB DAC, and HDMI ARC inputs allow the ID6 to accept external digital sources. I²S-LVDS, coaxial, optical, and USB Audio outputs also let it serve as a digital source for another DAC.
Separate power supplies for digital and analog circuits
A custom toroidal transformer feeds independent digital and analog power supplies. High-efficiency DC-DC regulation, low-noise linear regulators, and polymer molybdenum filter capacitors are used to suppress supply ripple and circuit noise. The electronics are housed in a machined aluminum-alloy chassis available in black or silver.
Touchscreen and app control
The 6-inch, 1080 × 2160 FHD+ touchscreen uses a landscape interface with multi-touch control. A dedicated ADC feedback circuit analyzes audio in real time for spectrum visualization and VU meter displays. The Cayin Control App provides access to timbre selection, playback settings, and device controls.
The volume knob combines controlled rotational resistance with an illuminated format indicator. Its color coding identifies PCM sample-rate groups from 44.1/48 kHz through 705.6/768 kHz, along with DSD playback.
Availability
The Cayin ID6 streamer DAC and headphone amplifier is now available on Apos for $1,899.
